Enzo Fernandez has been sent off in the World Cup final – after the Chelsea ace mocked England following their win over the Three Lions in the semi-final.

Fernandez was already on a yellow card for dissent when he clattered into Pau Cubarsí in the 93rd minute at MetLife Stadium. He could have no complaints – catching the Spanish defender late and sending him flipping in the air.

Speaking on the BBC, Alan Shearer said: “Fernandez might just have cost his team massively. Already being on a yellow card for something stupid, back chatting to the referee. When you are on a yellow you can’t do something like that.

“That’s so stupid. How daft is that?” While, over on BBC Radio 5 Live, Chris Sutton agreed: “Enzo Fernandez is disputing this. It seemed like a pretty wild challenge.

“He’s late and Cubarsi gets there first. It’s a second yellow and the first one was for diving…”

In the aftermath, Lionel Messi was seen trying to get Marc Cucurella sent off for covering his mouth – immediately telling the referee like he was a child on the school ground finding a teacher.

Fernandez had been Public Enemy No.1 in England after he rubbed salt in the wounds following the semi-final. He had netted the equaliser for Argentina, celebrating by cupping his ears and gesturing as if mimicking chatter.

The Chelsea ace, who had been seen with a Falkland Island’s banner on the pitch after full-time, then posted a photo of himself laughing with Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes on Instagram, with Oasis’ Wonderwall song playing in the background.

The tune had become an unofficial anthem for England, and Fernandez later deleted the post after widespread backlash.
