How Chelsea plan to unleash Rogers alongside Cole Palmer – Read Chelsea F.C.
Morgan Rogers will add power, versatility and another source of goals to Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea attack after completing his £117m move from Aston Villa.
The England international returned from the World Cup on Monday and underwent his medical in London. Chelsea have agreed a six-year contract, with an option to extend it by another season.
Arsenal had made Rogers their leading attacking target. However, Chelsea completed the transfer within 48 hours after presenting him with a clearer role.
The Blues had tracked Rogers for more than two years. Alonso, Behdad Eghbali and the sporting directors then worked together to secure his commitment after England’s semi-final defeat.
The London Standard reported that Alonso’s direct involvement played a key part in the move. Rogers also has strong relationships with Cole Palmer and Reece James.
Morgan Rogers’ Chelsea role starts on the left
Rogers can play centrally, but Chelsea initially plan to use him from the left. Palmer can therefore remain in the number ten role, where he has produced his best football.
The pair should not compete for the same space. Palmer often receives possession on the right before moving inside, while Rogers can attack from the opposite flank.
Rogers offers a different type of threat. He uses his strength and acceleration to carry the ball through midfield, attack defenders and break into the penalty area.
That direct running could help Chelsea against teams which disrupt their passing game. Rogers scored 14 goals and supplied 12 assists for Villa last season, so he also brings proven output.
Alonso could also use Rogers and Palmer as dual number tens in a back-three system. TalkSPORT’s tactical assessment suggested both players could operate ahead of Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo.
ReadChelsea previously explained how Chelsea promised Rogers a starting role on the left. That clarity helped the Blues move ahead of Arsenal.
Alonso gains power and tactical flexibility
Rogers gives Alonso several options without forcing Palmer away from central areas. He can start on the left, move inside during attacks or replace Palmer when Chelsea rotate.
The 23-year-old can also play in midfield or behind a striker. His versatility should help Alonso change shape without making early substitutions.
Chelsea struggled for goals during parts of last season. Rogers should reduce their reliance on Palmer while adding another player who can create or finish chances.
However, the £117m fee will bring immediate pressure. Rogers must adapt quickly because supporters will expect him to become one of Chelsea’s leading players.

Rogers must now prove he can influence matches against deep defensive blocks. Villa often gave him space to carry the ball, while Chelsea will regularly face crowded penalty areas.
Chelsea must trim Alonso’s squad
Rogers joins an attack that already includes Palmer, João Pedro, Pedro Neto, Estêvão, Geovany Quenda and Jamie Gittens. Chelsea also has several senior senior centers on its books.
Alonso will therefore need a smaller group before the transfer window closes. Alejandro Garnacho is available, while Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu also face uncertain futures.
Sales will help Chelsea balance their spending after another expensive summer. The club have already raised substantial fees through the departures of Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos and Tyrique George.
Rogers represents a shift towards more established Premier League players. Chelsea have paid a premium, but they believe his quality and age justify the investment.
The tactical plan appears clear. Rogers will begin from the left, Palmer will remain central and Alonso can move both players inside when he uses a back three.
Chelsea have secured one of England’s leading young attackers. Alonso must now build a balanced team around his two most creative players.
