Chelsea confirm record-breaking £117m Morgan Rogers transfer after Arsenal hijack
Morgan Rogers has joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a British record £117m transfer, with the England international signing a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
The Blues have paid their Premier League rivals £117million with Rogers signing a six-year contract, with the option for another 12 months, after he opted for a move to Chelsea over Arsenal.
The latter had been strongly linked to the 23-year-old prior to the World Cup, while Tottenham and Chelsea were loosely linked at that time. However, a deal was struck last weekend following a phone call from new Blues head coach Xabi Alonso to Rogers.
England and the World Cup have been Rogers’ focus over the last few weeks, but their campaign came to an end following a thrilling 6-4 third-placed playoff victory against France.

Rogers played the full 90 minutes but did not get a goal contribution. He did, however, assist Anthony Gordon’s goal in the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina, which was just his second start at the World Cup.
Speaking on his move to Chelsea, he said: “I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
Villa have sent their best wishes to Rogers – praising the player for his character and everything he achieved under Unai Emery.
They said: “Since joining from Middlesbrough in 2024, the midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence, helping Villa to lift the UEFA Europa League last term, scoring the third goal in the final in Istanbul.
Sky Sports, HBO Max, Netflix and Disney+ with Ultimate TV package

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.
Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.
“During his time at the club, he also earned his first senior England caps, representing his country at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the Three Lions finished third.
“A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career. He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories.”
Rogers, who is now due for a three-week break after representing England at the World Cup, is said to have been impressed by Alonso’s vision in SW6 as well as his plans for the Englishman. The Villa attacking midfielder arrived in London on Monday morning to undergo a medical before putting pen to paper and officially becoming a Chelsea player.
