Morgan Rogers completes record-breaking £117m transfer to Chelsea

Chelsea have completed the capture of Morgan Rogers after beating Arsenal to a whopping £117million deal for one of England’s World Cup stars

Morgan Rogers is officially a Chelsea player after finalising a transfer from Aston Villa which makes him the most expensive British footballer in history.

The England star, 23, has put pen to paper on a contract until 2033 which includes an option for a further year. He moves to Stamford Bridge for a seismic £117million transfer fee, a figure which eclipses the amount Manchester City agreed to part with in order to acquire his World Cup team-mate, Elliot Anderson.

Rogers was pursued for over two years by Chelsea, who beat off competition from Arsenal to sign the versatile attacking midfielder.

Chelsea stole a march on Arsenal when the Gunners were unwilling to move from their valuation of the player, Mirror Football understands.

According to sources, the Gunners valued the England international at £80m, and were willing to pay a slight premium – but were left stunned when Chelsea agreed to pay a fee that makes Rogers’ move the most expensive transfer of an Englishman in history – beating Anderson’s move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City by £1m.

His capture is a first major win for the Blues’ new manager, Xabi Alonso, who held productive talks with Rogers to help entice the former Middlesbrough man to west London.

Upon finalising his move, Rogers said: “I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.

“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve had a few conversations with him (Alonso) and I think it’s important for me to be here that I need to understand what the manager’s like, how he is and how he wants to operate.

“It very much fits with the way I see the game, the way I want to play, and the way I want to be me, and be free and express myself. Him being a part of that was a massive factor in me being here.”

Rogers came through the youth academy at West Brom before moving to Man City in 2019. He didn’t make a first-team appearance for City and went out on loan to Lincoln, Bournemouth and Blackpool.

He joined Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee in 2023 scoring five times in their run to the League Cup semi-finals. He joined Villa in the following January for £8m, potentially rising to £15m.

In all, Rogers made 125 appearances for Villa scoring 31 goals and helping them to the Europa League title last term.

On the international stage, Rogers made his senior England debut in November 2004 in a 3-0 victory against Greece in Athens. He has played 22 times for England, including at the recent World Cup, scoring once.
