Official: Morgan Rogers Joins Chelsea From Aston Villa
Chelsea have agreed the most expensive British signing in the history of English football, announcing England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033, joining Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The financial scale of the deal is frankly staggering, even by the profligate standards of the BlueCo regime. The deal is worth a reported £117 million or €137 million, making it the fifth most expensive transfer in football history behind the moves of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Alexander Isak. He was then unveiled to fans at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, July 21.
That valuation speaks of a meteoric rise that started in the Championship just thirty months ago. During his spell in the Midlands, Rogers was involved in 40 goals in 85 Premier League appearances and helped Villa to a top-four finish and Europa League glory last season. The forward has also made 22 international appearances since making his England debut in November 2024. He also helped the Three Lions to the semi-finals of this summer’s World Cup, only to be knocked out by Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
Arsenal were confident for much of the window that the marauding forward was going to be their player. However, their rejection of Villa’s demands paved the way for Chelsea, who agreed to the £117m fee with no add-ons, making Rogers the most expensive British player ever. And it’s claimed that Alonso himself encouraged the player to snub the Gunners.
Chelsea target Maxence Lacroix as Alonso rebuild gains pace
This landmark acquisition has not broken the Blues’ momentum in their summer reconstruction. Focus has quickly turned to Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, who is the club’s top priority to strengthen at centre-back this window. If the Frenchman arrives, he would be the seventh new signing to the first-team squad, after Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev, Emmanuel Emegha, and Rogers.
The two London institutions are at a delicate but advanced stage of talks, it is claimed. Chelsea have upped their bid to around £52 million, but Palace are still holding out for the £55 million valuation they placed on the defender, who is understood to want to leave Selhurst Park. Personal terms with Lacroix have been agreed.
A clear and emphatic denial of any possibility of Arsenal intervening with a counter-bid has been issued. Fabrizio Romano said suggestions of Gunners interest this weekend were wrong and added that Lacroix is fully concentrated on Stamford Bridge. It is now down to the two clubs to agree a fee. The next few days will reveal if Alonso gets the defensive reinforcement his potential back three requires.
