Arsenal remain £40m away from valuation for Bruno Guimaraes
Arsenal have taken a significant step in their pursuit of a new midfielder by opening direct discussions with Newcastle United.
The Gunners have admired Bruno Guimarães for several years, but their interest has now moved beyond informal enquiries as Mikel Arteta looks to add more control, creativity and Premier League experience to his squad.
The Brazilian is reportedly interested in moving to the Emirates Stadium before the 2026/27 campaign begins.
However, Newcastle’s valuation remains the biggest obstacle. Arsenal are preparing an offer worth around £60 million, while the Magpies believe their captain should command a fee much closer to £100 million.
The player’s preference gives Arsenal encouragement, but the large difference between the clubs means an agreement is still some distance away.
Arsenal involved in talks but valuation issue remains
According to The Sun, Arsenal have opened direct talks with Newcastle after Guimarães communicated his desire to join the Premier League champions.
The 28-year-old has two years remaining on his contract at St James’ Park, meaning Newcastle are not under immediate pressure to accept a reduced offer.
Arsenal are reportedly considering an opening proposal of approximately £60 million, but that figure is unlikely to satisfy the selling club.
Newcastle have already lost important players during the summer and will not want to weaken their midfield further without receiving enough money to fund a high-quality replacement.
Arsenal must therefore decide whether to improve their offer significantly or move quickly towards another target.
Gunners should make final decision soon
A separate talkSPORT report claims Arsenal previously had a £65 million proposal rejected and are expected to return with an offer exceeding £70 million.
Newcastle, however, continue to value their captain at around £100 million.
From a tactical perspective, Guimarães would be an excellent addition. His passing range, intensity and ability to operate as either a deeper midfielder or a number eight would give Arteta greater flexibility alongside Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi.
Arsenal should be willing to reach approximately £75 million, potentially with achievable add-ons.
That would reflect the player’s quality without matching Newcastle’s inflated valuation.
Guimarães could immediately improve Arsenal’s starting eleven, but paying close to £100 million for a player approaching 29 would carry considerable risk.
The Gunners are right to negotiate seriously, but they must retain the discipline to walk away if Newcastle refuse to compromise.
