Just like that, the 22-year-old is suddenly the target everyone wants to snatch up. Manchester United are right at the front of the queue, but Chelsea and Arsenal are lurking in the background ready to pounce.

Last season was the making of the Guernsey-born midfielder. He racked up 37 Premier League appearances during the 2025-26 campaign, putting 2,849 minutes on his legs. Three goals and a single assist might look modest on paper, but those raw numbers don’t tell half the story. Top-flight sides notice when a young player turns up week after week and controls games against elite opposition.

Why United want Scott specifically

He plays with a level of football brain you simply cannot teach. Pressing hard off the ball comes naturally to him. Give him the ball under heavy pressure, and he just wiggles out of tight spots before driving forward into open space. Instead of playing safe sideways passes, he looks to slice through lines.

Old Trafford bosses have already thrown around £85 million this summer to bring in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Yet there is still a missing piece. Santos brings that chaotic energy and wins the ball back. Tielemans provides calm passing and vision. Kobbie Mainoo needs a stable presence beside him, someone who sits deep, screens the back four, and cleans up second balls without fuss. Scott fits that profile down to the ground. Doing it consistently across 37 matches in the toughest league in the world proves he is ready for the step up.

Financial realities and United budget issues

Getting a deal over the line is a whole different puzzle. Bournemouth are digging their heels in, publicly and privately; the Cherries keep insisting their man is going nowhere this window. Contract standoff or not, they expect him in red and black when the season starts.

If their stance cracks, the price tag is set at a massive £80 million. That is serious money. United simply cannot afford to throw that kind of cash around without thinking, especially with major gaps elsewhere. A backup striker is on the summer shopping list, along with a new left-back and another option out on the left wing.

Selling Joshua Zirkzee could help balance the books. Moving Marcus Rashford on would free up even more capital. Even so, dropping £80 million on a third central midfielder feels like a massive stretch. Roma midfielder Manu Kone represents another genuine option. Talks have already taken place for the Frenchman, who comes with a much more digestible price tag of around £51 million.

Scott took 44 shots across those 37 matches last year, hitting the target 29.55 per cent of the time. His ability to carry the ball out of trouble under pressure makes him a modern dream for any manager, but United can only pull this off if Bournemouth back down on their valuation.

Scorzo’s view on the move

United look like they are window shopping here. Spending £80 million on Scott right now makes very little financial sense when you consider Santos and Tielemans are already through the door and other areas of the squad urgently need attention. Kone at £51 million is clearly the smarter business. Scott is a brilliant talent, no question about that, but Bournemouth hold all the cards and won’t let him leave on the cheap.
