Hato’s move to Chelsea from Ajax only happened last August. It felt like a massive coup at the time. The Dutch left-back had already racked up nearly a century of senior appearances before turning 20, captaining Ajax and looking every bit the modern, ball-playing defender top European sides crave. Chelsea signed him on a long-term deal through to 2032. Then reality hit.

His debut year in England was messy. Chelsea slumped to a 10th-place finish, sacked managers like they were going out of fashion, and never built a settled back line. Hato managed 22 appearances in all competitions, but only 12 were starts. Accumulating seven yellow cards in just 1,144 minutes tells its own story about a young player constantly scrambling to cover for an unstable team.

The precedent and the tactical fit

Crossing the London divide isn’t the taboo it used to be. Noni Madueke traded Stamford Bridge for the Emirates last summer, going on to play a key role in Arsenal’s title win and England’s World Cup campaign. The path is well worn.

Arteta wants more defensive depth anyway. Links to Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa show the club are actively looking to bolster their options. Adding a 20-year-old with Hato’s ceiling fits the broad recruitment model. From the player’s perspective, the attraction is obvious. He gets to work under a coach famous for developing young talent, trade Europa League noise for Champions League football, and leave behind the circus for a stable, winning environment.

What happens next?

The sticking point is Chelsea. Paying a fortune for a top prospect only to sell him to a rival 12 months later looks terrible, no matter how bad the season went. If the Stamford Bridge hierarchy are genuinely prepared to entertain business here, it says plenty about their current state. Arteta should at least pick up the phone and ask the price, because getting a player of Hato’s talent at a cut-price rate doesn’t happen often.
