Pundit gives his take on Enzo Fernandez’ Chelsea future after his antics against England in FIFA World Cup S/F

Former footballer-turned-pundit Emmanuel Petit believes Enzo Fernandez is fed up with playing for Chelsea, saying the midfielder is deliberately trying to ruin his relationship with the Blues.

Petit made the remarks in response to Fernandez’s antics following Argentina’s 2-1 FIFA World Cup semi-final win over England.

After the match, Fernandez posted a picture of himself alongside Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes on Instagram, accompanied by the Oasis song Wonderwall, which became the soundtrack to England’s World Cup campaign.

The Daily Mail reported that the choice of music was widely interpreted as a dig at the Three Lions.

Speaking to Mr GamblePetit suggested it was time for his former side and Fernandez to part ways, stating that the midfielder has repeatedly conveyed his desire to leave the West London club in the last few months.

“I would be shocked if Enzo Fernandez stays because obviously he doesn’t want to stay in England. You can see how he behaved during the World Cup. So I think he knows it, and this is why he did it, because he wants to go even further with this idea of breaking the relationship with Chelsea,” Petit said.

“I think he tried everything he could in the last few months to send strong messages to the Chelsea board saying, ‘Listen, you see that I don’t want to stay.’ So, I think for the best interest of both parties, they should just separate ways. Simple as that. It’s time to get rid of him. I think Fernandez doesn’t care about Chelsea. (Marc) Cucurella did care a lot.”

Since the turn of the year, Fernandez’s future at Stamford Bridge has been up in the air. In April, the Argentine was handed a two-match suspension by the club after making comments about a potential move to Real Madrid.

Xabi Alonso wants Fernandez at Chelsea amid exit rumours

Amid the speculation surrounding Fernandez’s future at Chelsea, new manager Xabi Alonso maintained that he wants to keep the vice-captain at Stamford Bridge. During his maiden press conference as Blues boss, Alonso played down any talk of a sale.

When asked if he wanted Fernandez to remain at the club next season, Alonso responded:

“Yes.”

“Yes we have spoken. But as you can imagine what we have spoken remains private,” Alonso added when asked if his conversation with Fernandez would be disclosed.

Fernandez joined the Blues in 2023, and his current deal with the club will expire in 2032.
