Chelsea will reportedly target Premier League-ready players this summer amid transfer links with Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. Reports claiming that Gordon is of interest also raises doubts over Alejandro Garnacho’s future at Stamford Bridge.
The Argentine winger has struggled badly since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Manchester United last summer. Garnacho has had little to no impact under Enzo Maresca or Liam Rosenior and has scored just one Premier League goal this season, coming in a 2-1 defeat against Sunderland back in October.
Garnacho’s struggles at west London have seen several wingers linked as a possible replacement, with the Athletic claiming that Gordon is an option. And in a boost to the Blues, it is said that any potential deal is not dependent on Chelsea qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
The Blues are currently eighth as they sit 10 points off fifth-placed Aston Villa, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot. Chelsea could still qualify for Europe’s elite competition if they finish sixth and Villa win the Europa League, though.

There will have been concern that missing out on the Champions League could severely restrict their ability to attract elite talent this summer.
Therefore, reports over a deal for Gordon not being dependent on which European competition they qualify for will be welcome news.
Gordon has had a mixed campaign – he is the club’s top scorer with 18 goals, including 10 in the Champions League, but has often struggled to find his best form. Nonetheless, the forward looks set to be an integral part of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans.
However, it is claimed that while Chelsea are keen on the player, they have other priorities in the near term – mainly finding a new permanent head coach after Rosenior was sacked last week.

It is reported that a list of transfer targets has been drawn up, though with players who have experience of English top-flight the priority.
It is also claimed that they want players with top-league experience who are used to playing in four competitions in a season. They are also said to be looking for players who are emotionally mature and have strong character.
The summer window opens this year on June 15 before closing on August 31.
