Chelsea sign Wigan teenager Harrison Bettoni as director explains deal
Bettoni, whose contract at Wigan expired in June, is expected to spend the coming season working within Chelsea’s academy set-up and on the fringes of Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad.
The Stockport-born forward enjoyed a breakthrough 2025-26 campaign at Wigan, making 27 appearances at senior level and scoring four goals, including his side’s goal of the season on his debut against AFC Wimbledon. He also featured against Arsenal in an FA Cup fourth-round tie and has been at the club since joining from Bury at Under-13 level in 2019.
Wigan managing director Sarah Guilfoyle confirmed the move had been a difficult one to accept, having tried repeatedly to keep hold of the teenager.
“As a Club, we made every possible effort to retain Harrison. We offered Harrison multiple strong and competitive long-term offers to remain at Wigan Athletic, reflecting both the high regard we have for his ability and the importance we saw him having in our future.”
She added that the club had ultimately respected the player’s decision to move on.
“Ultimately, every player reaches a point where they must make a decision they believe is right for their career. Harrison has chosen to pursue a new opportunity, and while we are disappointed not to see him continue his journey with us, we respect his decision.”
Guilfoyle also confirmed that Wigan had secured compensation reflecting the club’s investment in Bettoni’s development.
“We’ve worked closely with Chelsea to agree a compensation package that reflects the time, care, and investment our Academy has put into Harrison’s development from a young age. Producing talented young players is something our Academy takes immense pride in, and it’s important that work is recognised.”
She closed her statement by wishing the teenager well for the next stage of his career.
“We thank Harrison for everything he has contributed during his time with us and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
The move continues a pattern of recruitment for Chelsea under their current ownership, with the club having repeatedly moved to secure promising young English talent from lower-league academies in recent windows.
Bettoni is unlikely to feature for the first team immediately, with the expectation instead that he will spend time with Chelsea’s Under-21 side before a potential loan move to another EFL club to continue gaining senior experience next season.
