Arsenal fans have a lot to say about Morgan Rogers’ Chelsea announcement comments

Chelsea have officialy completed the signing of Aston Villla midfielder Morgan Rogers, who had been Arsenal’s primary target for the summer window.

The Gunners set out to add a dynamic left winger to their squad during this off-season, on top of Christos Tzolis, who has signed from Club Brugge for £34 million. Rogers was identified as the top target, with Mikel Arteta reportedly extremely keen on landing the England international.

However, Villa held firm on their outlandish asking price, and this eventually paid dividends for the West Mildanders as Chelsea made a £117 million proposal for the 23-year-old. This record-breaking deal has now gone through, and Arsenal are subsequently looking elsewhere for their marquee left-winger signing.

Various reports suggest that Andrea Berta wasn’t willing to go above the £100 million mark for Rogers, although the player was open to a move to North London.

That said, his first comments as a Chelsea player certainly don’t reflect his purported willingness to ply his trade at the Emirates…

Arsenal fans weren’t happy with Morgan Rogers’ statement upon signing for Chelsea

Not only did Chelsea offer Villa an astronomical fee Arsenal weren’t willing to match, they also reportedly offered Rogers ridiculously lucrative wages.

Thus, it’s no surprise that the former Manchester City man, who is also best friends with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, opted for a move to Stamford Bridge.

Upon signing for the Blues, Rogers spoke of his friendship with Palmer, before making the bold claim that he’d joined the biggest club in London.

“I’m happy to join the biggest club in London,” he told Chelsea’s official website.

Unsurprisingly, this claim hasn’t gone down well amongst Gunners supporters.

One fan took to X to point out Noni Madueke, now an ardent Gooner, said the exact same thing when he signed for Chelsea: “The way they get their signings to always say it is too sad, they’re so insecure.”

Another responded: “Chelsea have 14 league titles?”

Meanwhile, another wrote: “He meant biggest club in West London.”

Another Arsenal supporter went to further lengths to express how ridiculous he believed Rogers’ claim to be. He wrote: “Very soon we will meet in the PL and we’ll still beat Chelsea like we always do, so whoever they sign won’t change it, even if they sign prime Messi and Ronaldo.”

Morgan Rogers wasn’t the right fit for Arsenal anyway

Rogers’ claim was no doubt just an attempt to appease the Chelsea fanbase. After being so heavily linked with Arsenal, it was important he quashed this association by affirming his admiration for the Gunners’ West London rivals, so that he could be welcomed with open arms by his new followers.

Ultimately, he likely would’ve said something along similar lines had he ended up at Arsenal. Gunners supporters can now look forward to booing him at the Emirates next season, with a potential new pantomime villian being born.

Regardless, he wasn’t the right fit for Arsenal. Arteta is looking for a dynamic new winger who is comfortable operating wide on the left, rather than a hybrid winger/number ten to operate in the half-spaces. While he may suit Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-3 system, he would’ve been an awkward fit for Arteta’s more conventional 4-3-3.

While Arsenal’s boss may have been convinced he could mould Rogers into what he wanted, this is one hell of a gamble to make at that sort of price.
