Chelsea keen on making move for 25-year-old England attacker in summer transfer window: Reports

Chelsea are allegedly interested in signing England and Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon to strengthen their offensive department this summer.

Gordon, who turned 25 earlier this February, has established himself as one of the best stars at Newcastle United since leaving his boyhood team Everton in January 2023. He has helped the Magpies notch an EFL Cup so far, emerging as a regular for the Three Lions in the process.

Now, according to The Athletic, Chelsea are keen to add Gordon to their ranks this summer, with a potential move not dependent on the Blues qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. They are aiming to snap up the forward in alignment with their recent desire to sign Premier League-proven stars in the summer transfer window.

Moreover, the Stamford Bridge outfit admire Gordon for his experience of featuring in four different competitions in one season. They also believe that the Englishman is emotionally mature and has strong character.

Gordon, who is also reportedly a Bayern Munich target now, has impressed for the Magpies this campaign. The Liverpool-born player, who is nursing a hip injury now, has registered 17 goals and five assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for Eddie Howe’s side this term.

Should Gordon secure a permanent switch to Chelsea in the near future, he would emerge as a vital starter for the west London outfit. He would also help youngsters such as Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian mature.

Chelsea told to hire Premier League boss

During a recent interaction on Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Paul Merson stated that Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe should be hired by the Blues. He said (h/t Metro):

“I’d take Eddie Howe. The problem at Chelsea now is the way it is and the way it’s all run. I think they’ll be getting a manager who is grateful to be managing Chelsea, instead of a top drawer manager. The days of your Mourinhos, Contes, Tuchels, Ancelottis, those top, top managers where the club are grateful for them being the manager of the club (are gone).”

Howe, 48, is a seasoned Premier League manager, having coached in the English top-flight for close to 10 full seasons. The former Bournemouth manager, however, could be sacked by Newcastle as his club are currently in 14th spot in the Premier League table with 42 points.

On the other hand, the Blues are eighth with 48 points from 34 league games, the same number of matches played by Howe’s current side.
