That is the reality of Axel Disasi’s Chelsea nightmare right now. Standard Sport has reported that the Blues are finally looking to cut their losses on the French centre-back. The asking price? £25m. It is a steep hit to swallow for a player brought in from Monaco with such high expectations back in the summer of 2023, but Stamford Bridge is a cold place when you fall out of favour.

Disasi hasn’t kicked a ball for Chelsea in a competitive game since a brief 14-minute cameo against Wolves way back in January 2025. Enzo Maresca exiled him straight to the club’s notorious bomb squad almost immediately after, leaving the 28-year-old completely isolated.

A decent spell in east London ended in heartbreak

February deadline day brought a temporary lifeline. West Ham took a gamble on a six-month loan, dropping him straight into the harsh environment of a Premier League survival fight. To his credit, he rolled up his sleeves. He managed 17 appearances across all competitions, chipped in with a goal, and helped secure 5 clean sheets along the way. He actually gave the Hammers some much-needed backbone at the back. Nuno Espirito Santo was impressed enough to want him permanently, while Fulham and Aston Villa were keeping tabs on his situation too.

Then came the inevitable crash. West Ham went down, tumbling into the Championship alongside Burnley and Wolves. Relegation killed off any chance of a permanent switch to the London Stadium instantly. Disasi has no intention of playing second-tier football, and West Ham simply cannot afford him now anyway.

Scorzo’s take: No future under Alonso at Cobham

If he thought a fresh start awaited him back at Chelsea, he was dead wrong. Xabi Alonso has taken the reins, but Disasi is nowhere near his plans for the upcoming campaign. He hasn’t even turned up at Cobham for pre-season work. Instead, he spent his summer sweating it out in Marrakech, waiting for his agent to sort out an escape route. Chelsea hold a bit of leverage because his contract runs until 2029, yet nobody benefits from keeping an unwanted player on the payroll for another four years.

Alonso is busy shaping his own squad during another frantic summer. Chelsea have already brought in Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Emanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda. Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho is off to Villa on loan with a conditional buy clause attached.

Writing off £14m on a defender who was meant to be a long-term solution feels absurd on paper. It speaks volumes about the ruthless, trial-and-error way the board operates these days. Still, if a club need a proven international defender who can command a box, £25m might prove to be proper value in this market.
