John Stones could be about to become one of the biggest free transfer stories of the summer. As per the latest transfer news, Chelsea are weighing up a move for the England defender following his exit from Manchester City this year.
John Stones Emerges As Free Agent Option
As reported by BBC Sport, the centre-back is now a free agent after his Manchester City deal ran out at the end of June, and the Blues find themselves competing with Inter Milan for his signature. Arsenal, Everton and Juventus have also been credited with interest, which shows just how highly he’s still rated at 32. For a club still rebuilding its defence, a free deal for a player of that experience level represents notable value.
Signed from Everton for £47.5m back in 2016, John Stones went on to make close to 300 appearances during his near-decade at City. His trophy cabinet from that spell reads six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups and a stack of domestic silverware besides. Few defenders anywhere can match that kind of trophy collection.

| Competitions | Matches | Starts | Duels Won | Defensive Contributions |
| Premier League | 9 | 5 | 14 | 31 |
| FA Cup | 3 | 3 | 13 | 27 |
| EFL Cup | 2 | 1 | 2 | 4 |
| UCL | 4 | 4 | 12 | 18 |
Even so, his contract was not renewed. He now has to weigh up his next move as a free agent, with a few Premier League clubs watching closely. Meanwhile, interest from across Europe continues to grow.
Chelsea Also Chase Other Defensive Reinforcements
John Stones is not the only name on Chelsea’s list. Xabi Alonso is believed to favour a three-man centre-back setup, which requires additional defensive options. Talks are ongoing with Crystal Palace over Maxence Lacroix, while Como’s Jacobo Ramon is also being watched closely. Last season’s injury problems at the back have made squad depth a clear priority.
However, incomings usually depend on outgoings. So, Chelsea are also looking to sell central defenders to free up space in the squad. As reported by BBC Sport, among those departures, Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile remain up for sale, while Trevoh Chalobah is drawing interest from Como and reportedly Inter Milan too, who see him as a fallback option if a John Stones deal doesn’t materialize. Young defender Josh Acheampong remains at the club for now, despite interest from other clubs. So far, none of these deals look close to completion.
As reported by Sky Sports, the Blues have already raised around £130m through player sales this summer, with more exits expected before the window shuts. This shows more squad changes are likely, and John Stones could still fit into that bigger picture.

What John Stones Could Bring To Chelsea
On paper, John Stones fits the type of player Xabi Alonso wants. He is experienced and able to adapt quickly. Alonso wants calm heads in a defence that has looked shaky at times. As reported by Yahoo Sports, Chelsea have added the defender to their list of centre-back targets this summer after already signing Italian right-back Marco Palestra in defence earlier in the window.
Internationally, he has 93 caps for England and featured five times at this year’s World Cup as the Three Lions finished third. That blend of club and country pedigree is rare in footballand it’s exactly the kind of experience a Chelsea side still finding its shape under Alonso could use.
Elsewhere, the club’s business keeps moving fast. Chelsea confirmed Morgan Rogers’ £117m arrival from Aston Villa on Tuesday, and a loan move sending Alejandro Garnacho the other way is also under discussion.
