Enzo Fernandez breaks silence after World Cup final heartbreak

Enzo Fernandez broke his silence after the heartbreaking World Cup final. Spain defeated Argentina to win the World Cup after 16 years.

Fernandez addressed the public for the first time after the FIFA World Cup final (which was held on July 19). He protested a refereeing decision in the 82nd minute, as reported by Hindustan Times. The referee gave the midfielder another yellow card in the 93rd minute for a late challenge against Spanish defender Pau Cubarsi. This resulted in a red card for Fernandez, and he had to leave the field.

Days later, the Argentinian player shared his thoughts on his Instagram post. He did not talk about his send-off, but he wrote that his team “has represented our country in the best possible way.”

Fernandez further added that he wants to thank all the fans for their continuous support. For him, wearing the Argentina shirt is a badge of honor and he will continue to do everything to defend it.

Fernandez performed well for Argentina ever since he made his international debut in 2022. The midfielder was a part of the Argentina team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2022. This was their first World Cup title win after 36 years. Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties to win the title.

After that, the Chelsea midfielder participated at the 2024 Copa America, where Argentina won the title for the second consecutive time. They defeated Colombia 1-0, with Lautaro Martinez scoring the golden goal in the 112th minute.

What’s next for Enzo Fernandez ?

Fernandez will currently rest for a while before preparing for the next football season. The midfielder is currently in a dilemma about the upcoming season. Although Chelsea want to retain him, he isn’t too sure about the same. Apart from that, Fernandez also needs to work on his fitness. He sustained a knee injury in November 2025. In April 2026, he also suffered from a calf injury during a match against Manchester United. However, he recovered in time for the FIFA World Cup.

Fernandez performed well individually for the Blues last year. He also played a crucial role in the FIFA Club World Cup. The Blues won the title for the second time since the 2021 edition. Despite that, they finished 10th in the Premier League overall. Initially, there were rumors about Fernandez making a move for Real Madrid. However, he has not officially confirmed the same. Moreover, if anybody wants to buy Fernandez for the next year, they will have to pay an asking price of £120 million. He was signed from Benfica in January 2023 for an amount of £106.8 million.

Fernandez’s aggression may have cost him the World Cup this time. However, he has a lot to achieve. The age factor is in his favor, and if he stays with Chelsea, he could bring back the Blues to winning ways. Team manager Xabi Alonso has expressed faith in his skills. Apart from that, the midfielder will face additional responsibilities. Although he is not a striker like Lionel Messi, he will have to lead from the front in the runup to the 2030 FIFA World Cup. It remains to be seen if Fernandez is equally interested in taking up the challenge in the next season.
