Club Chief Makes Claim About World Record “Offer From Chelsea” As He Reveals Transfer Stance On Liverpool Target
Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says there is an “unwritten law” that will stop Liverpool transfer target Michael Olise from leaving the club this summer.
Asked whether a world record offer would even tempt the Bundesliga side into offloading the France international, Rummenigge revealed that they had such a proposal from Chelsea for Frank Ribery, but they decided that no player of such importance could ever be sold:
“I’ll tell you a story from the past. In 2009, we had an incredible offer from Chelsea for Franck Ribery. That would have been a new transfer world record at the time. I then took it to our CFO at the time, Karl Hopfner and Uli Hoeness. We discussed for two hours what we were going to do with this offer.”
“On that day, we decided something fundamental: that we would not sell any more players in the future who we would miss on the pitch. And this unwritten law still applies today. For a player like Olise, there is no price tag that would make us cringe.”
Liverpool cannot afford the winger
As if it wasn’t already obvious, the Reds will not have the funds to sign the former Crystal Palace player.
Despite being the ideal successor for Mo Salah, Bayern’s stance on his departure means they will need to look at different targets.
Who could be signed instead of Olise?
It is believed that sporting director Richard Hughes and the club’s recruitment team have already identified RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande as a more realistic option, although the 19-year-old could still end up costing close to £90m.
Other wingers, including Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche, Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, Juventus’s Francisco Conceicao and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordonhave also been mentioned as potential targets.
