Steven Gerrard Names The 2 Players Who Could Have “Made A Big Difference” This Season If Liverpool Had Signed Them

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard claims that his former club missed out on “two bargains” when Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo both joined Manchester City during the January transfer window.

Speaking during TNT Sports’ coverage of the FA Cup semi-final between Pep Guardiola’s side and Southampton, Gerrard said:

“They should be playing for Liverpool, that hurts even more! We were linked with those two players who would have made a big difference to Liverpool.”

“I’ve said it before on record, two top, top players, and for the price that they got them in as well, in today’s market, they’re two bargains.”

“Quality players, experience, ready to go into the prime years of their career, international-level players and what they’ve done is just help kick City on at the right time.”

Why didn’t Liverpool sign Guehi?

The 25-year-old was on the verge of completing a move to Anfield last summer before the deal dramatically collapsed on Deadline Day.

Many assumed that the Reds would revive their interest in January, only for Guehi to secure a £20m move to City instead.

However, it later emerged that the England international’s contract demands were excessive. He is said to be earning around £300,000 a week, including bonuses.

Semenyo made City his favoured destination

It was suggested that Liverpool would have the inside track on a deal for the Ghanaian because of sporting director Richard Hughes. He had signed the player for Bournemouth from Bristol City.

However, Semenyo is believed to have told suitors that City were the club he wanted to play for. Other teams, including Chelsea, Tottenham and Man United, made attempts to secure the player, but it seems his heart was set on a switch to the Etihad. Ultimately, Liverpool never made an approach, knowing full well he wouldn’t come to Anfield.
