Maxence Lacroix is Chelsea’s best piece of business

There is no doubt that Rogers is Chelsea’s most exciting addition so far. He is a £117m attacker who is proven in the Premier League.

However, signing Lacroix for £52m just sounds like a much better deal. The Blues were in desperate need of a new centre-back and are getting one of the most reliable in the division for just £52m.

Honestly, that is not a huge fee when you consider the market right now. As already mentioned, Chelsea had to pay £117m for Rogers, while Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have also spent £100m on a single player during this transfer window.

Last season, Lacroix made 7.2 clearances per game in the Premier League. It was the joint-highest average alongside Virgil van Dijk, according to WhoScored.

His average of 3.4 aerial duels won per game was also one of the highest in the English top flight, which is another reason why you can claim that the 26-year-old was such a reliable centre-half in the previous campaign.

That is in contrast to Chelsea’s other centre-back options, who were either injured or out of form.

True, Xabi Alonso also needed another left winger. But had the Club World Cup holders not signed Rogers, Alonso still would have had an attack consisting of Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto. That is a forward line that still carries a huge threat.

With the likes of Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile struggling on the pitch and to stay fit, central defence was a more pressing matter.

Chelsea’s transfer business is very unlikely to be over. A bid for Alex Scott has been rejected, so it is probable that they will try to sign a midfielder before the market closes.

But as of now, Lacroix is getting my vote for Chelsea’s best deal of the summer so far!
