Liverpool weigh Chelsea raid after Gomez injury blow
Liverpool are considering a move for Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, one of three defenders on their radar after Joe Gomez’s injury, according to TeamTalk.
The teenager is on a shortlist alongside Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nnamdi Collins and RB Leipzig’s Lutsharel Geertruida.
New head coach Andoni Iraola addressed the club’s defensive options earlier this week. “We have some tricky positions where we have injured players that we trust, but still not the ideal situation,” he said.
“So with the centre-back and the right-back situations in terms of defensive depth, we are, I think, really thin right now, and it is a solution we are trying to find.”
Liverpool weigh Chelsea raid after Gomez injury blow
Liverpool’s options have been squeezed from several directions this summer. Andy Robertson’s contract was allowed to expire, while talks over a new deal for Ibrahima Konaté broke down, and the Frenchman joined Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remain out with long-term injuries. Gomez then added to the crisis, forced off just ten minutes into Liverpool’s 4-2 friendly win over Sunderland with an apparent muscle problem.
The Liverpool Echo reports the club is stepping up its search for a versatile defender capable of playing right-back or centre-half. Acheampong fits that profile, and Liverpool made an enquiry for him as far back as 1 June.
Any deal may not be straightforward, though. Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, is understood to view the 20-year-old as central to his squad rather than a player he is willing to sell this summer.
