Back in March, the midfielder made zero effort to hide his itch for a move away from Stamford Bridge. The hierarchy responded by handing him a two-match suspension for stepping out of line, but the noise never really stopped. His agent then spent the World Cup dropping heavy hints to anyone with a microphone that his client still wanted out. Now, with pre-season underway, Chelsea have slapped a £120m price tag on his head while Real Madrid, the main club he seemed to be winking at, have very publicly pulled back from the table.

In the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, Fernandez racked up 3,122 minutes across 36 outings. He netted 10 times, including two spot-kicks and a header, while setting up four more. He completed 87% of his 1,713 passes, created 49 opportunities for teammates, and won 38 tackles. A tally of 10 bookings tells you he was not hiding from the dirty work either. In Europe, he added another three goals and two assists in 10 Champions League games.

Across all competitions, that is 50 matches, 13 goals, six assists, and over 4,100 minutes of football, hardly the output of someone coasting or downing tools.

Here lies the strange twist in the whole story. The midfielder’s strong form easily justifies a high asking price, yet those exact same performances give Chelsea every reason to refuse a discount.

Morris is spot on about one thing: you cannot let nostalgia or sentiment run a football club. If Fernandez fundamentally lacks the desire to play under Xabi Alonso, that kind of friction eventually bleeds into the dressing room. It poisons the atmosphere.

Still, £120m is serious cash. With Real Madrid stepping out of the frame so openly, finding a club willing to clear that bar seems almost impossible before the deadline. Chelsea are well within their rights to sit tight and wait for a proper offer, even if it means this whole drama drags well into September.
