“It’s a dream come true” – Chelsea loanee repays faith with superb goal on home debut
Chelsea loanee Jesse Derry continued his impressive start to life at Sporting by scoring on his first appearance at the Estádio José Alvalade and admitting afterwards that he did not even know how to celebrate.
The 19-year-old winger found the net in Sporting’s 2-0 pre-season victory over Monaco on Saturday, producing a composed finish that left goalkeeper Philipp Köhn with no chance.
Speaking to Sporting TV after the match, Derry admitted playing in front of the home supporters was a dream come true. His words were relayed by Record.
“Everyone dreams of playing in a stadium like this. It’s a dream come true,” he said.
“It’s a great honour to play here in front of all these people, especially for such a big club as Sporting. I’m very honoured and proud to play for Sporting.”
Celebration caught him by surprise
The England U19 international confessed the goal itself left him momentarily speechless.
“It was fantastic to see the ball go into the net. The goalkeeper didn’t even move. It was incredible to see the fans celebrating. I hope to score many more.”
Asked what went through his mind after scoring, Derry smiled and replied: “I genuinely didn’t know what to do. I just looked at the stands. It was incredible.”
The goal continues an encouraging start to Derry’s loan spell after Chelsea sent him to Portugal for the season to gain regular senior experience.
Settling in quickly
Derry also expressed confidence that Sporting are in a strong position ahead of the new campaign and praised the welcome he has received since arriving from Chelsea.
“Yes, it’s exciting. Not only for the fans, but for us as well. There are a lot of new players and that brings excitement for everyone. We’re in the perfect position so close to the start of the season.”
“The players have been fantastic. It’s difficult to come into a senior team at such a young age, but they’ve welcomed me incredibly well. It’s been really good.”
The winger finished with a message for Sporting supporters, joking that his Portuguese still needs some work.
“Give me a month to speak Portuguese!” he laughed. “Thank you for welcoming me. I hope to see you all soon.”
After already making a positive impression during pre-season, Derry will now hope his first goal at Alvalade is the start of an important year in his development before returning to Chelsea.
