“There’s no doubt he’s got quality”
Pundit Micky Gray has advised Manchester United to beat Chelsea and Arsenal to the signing of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero this summer. The Argentina international is looking to move clubs, having grown disillusioned with life at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Gray admitted that while Romero has his flaws as a person and a player, he would not hesitate to have him at Manchester United. He pointed out that the opportunity to have him play alongside Lisandro Martinez is one that ought not to be missed by the club.
Thanks for the submission!
“I would take him to Man United in a heartbeat. Just because Romero had a fall-out at Tottenham and he wasn’t happy. I think he even kicked up a fuss about certain signings or non-signings coming to Tottenham, didn’t he? I don’t think that’s one thing that frustrated him.
But the chance to put (Lisandro) Martinez and Romero back together as a pairing, whether you love or hate them, you know what you’re getting from them. And I think with Michael and his coaching staff, I wouldn’t say nurture is the right word, don’t do that with a player like Romero. But I think if you can just calm him down a little bit, there’s no doubt he’s got quality. He’s a great centre-half.
Whether Man United look in that position or not, I don’t know, because obviously they’ve got (Ayden) Heaven, they’ve got (Leny) Yoro, they’ve got younger centre-halves who are coming through”, he said.
Romero has decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur and has been linked with both Chelsea and Arsenal. Spurs are in talks with Serie A champions Inter Milan over a deal for the centre-back, who was sent off twice in the 2025-26 Premier League season.
Chelsea have brought in Maxence Lacroix for £52 million and will be reluctant to spend on any more centre-backs this summer. Arsenal, on the other hand, have not made an approach for the Argentine defender as they look to replace the injured William Saliba.
Manchester United have five senior centre-backs on their books, and Michael Carrick will be wary about adding more to that number. With the UEFA Champions League to come this season, however, they need a reasonably big squad to compete on multiple fronts.
Chelsea still keen on midfielder wanted by Arsenal and Manchester United: Reports
Chelsea remain keen to sign England international Alex Scott, who has interest from Arsenal and Manchester United, as per reports. The Blues are strengthening their squad this summer, following the arrival of Xabi Alonso, and have Scott among their targets.
A report from Florian Plettenberg has revealed that the Blues are prepared to make another offer to sign the 22-year-old midfielder. They have seen a £64 million bid rejected by Bournemouth but remain undeterred in their pursuit of the youngster this summer.
Arsenal and Manchester United also appreciate the Bournemouth midfielder, but neither side has made an official move to sign him. He has turned down a new contract from the Cherries, and could well be on his way to Stamford Bridge this summer.
