7 Chelsea players who could walk the plank as Xabi Alonso calls for sales
Chelsea are now ‘ready’ to focus on player sales, according to Xabi Alonso, with big money spent again this summer. Morgan Rogers cost a British-record £117million, while Marco Palestra has also arrived on a big money deal this summer.
There could yet be more signings as Alonso looks to put his own stamp on this squad, and it looks as though centre-back Maxence Lacroix will be the next in.
But at some point in the near future, the Blues need to start selling players, both to make room in their squad and to balance the books. Here we take a look at the likely exit candidates, and we are focusing on senior players rather than the young likely loan exitees.
Trevoh Chalobah
Chalobah has been a reliable operator for Chelsea, but he is not seen as a top-level player who is going to carry the Blues in the biggest games. The England international is likely to want to be a starter, and if Lacroix is signed, it’s unlikely he will find regular starts at Stamford Bridge. An exit could well be on the cards for Chalobah this summer.
Benoit Badiashile
Badiashile could also be sold, and there is talk of interest in Italy, with AC Milan heavily linked this summer. The defender is also said to be interested in a move to Italy. It’s unlikely he is a big part of Alonso’s plans, especially amid reports Tosin Adarabioyo is staying, leaving less room.
Axel Disasi
Disasi did well out on loan with West Ham last season, and that will have helped put him in the shop window, but it’s clear he is not wanted at Chelsea, and it has been for some time. Roma are the latest club to be linked with the centre-back.
Nicolas Jackson
This could be a case of one or the other between the next two players, and we will start with Jackson. The forward did well during a loan spell with Bayern Munich last season, and there could well be a market for him this summer. But Chelsea will want big money unless another club offers a big loan fee, as Bayern did. Alonso may well give Jackson a chance, but it could depend on which other strikers leave the club.
Liam Delap
One of the more likely departures at the top end of the pitch is Liam Delap, who struggled to adjust to life at Stamford Bridge. He is a talented player who is still young, but Delap did not look close to the standard Chelsea are trying to play at with his performances last season.
Alonso is unlikely to put up with that, and so a move is likely for Delap, even if Chelsea have to settle on a loan deal for now, given they are unlikely to make anything close to their money back at this stage.
Marc Guiu
Guiu is another striker who is still young, now 20 years of age. He went on loan to Sunderland last season and was quickly recalled. Another loan move could be in the offing this summer, given Emmanuel Emegha is at the club, and along with Joao Pedro, if Chelsea keep or replace Jackson, opportunities are going to be extremely limited.
Josh Acheampong
There are still big hopes for Acheampong, there is no doubt about that, but Chelsea have too many senior right-backs at this stage. Reece James and Marco Palestra are both going to be relied upon, while Malo Gusto could leave. Even if he does, there is one too many, and it’s likely Acheampong will have the best chance of continuing his development out on loan.
