“This doesn’t make sense”, “I thought we was past this”

Chelsea fans have been left shocked by the club’s reported interest in signing Brighton & Hove Albion star Danny Welbeck.

The 35-year-old forward has been a regular feature in the Premier League for the past decade and a half. A graduate of Manchester United’s academy, he has since gone on to play for Arsenal, Watford, Sunderland and the Seagulls in the English top flight.

He enjoyed his most productive EPL campaign in the 2025-26 season, racking up 13 goals and an assist in 37 league games. Chelsea, who have had a transfer policy centred around young talent over the past few seasons, have somewhat strangely expressed an interest in signing the English veteran (via @kierangill_DM on X).

The decision left Blues fans stunned and they took to social media to express their feelings. In response to the original tweet that broke the news, one fan wrote:

“This doesn’t make sense. Clearly this account has been hacked.”

A supporter referenced the numerous players that the London side have signed Brighton in the recent past (Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez, Joao Pedro and so on), claiming:

“NOT Brighton again!! I thought we was past this.”

A fan queried:

“Wtf we need that man for? We have more than 4 strikers btw.”

Another supporter hilariously remarked:

“Ahhh so this is the one a year deal with Brighton.”

A fan wrote:

“What the hell? I hope this is just a smoke screen man.”

Another criticized the idea due to Welbeck’s age, writing:

“We want Premier League Experience. Not coming out of retirement experience.”

If Chelsea do sign Welbeck, he will compete with Nicolas Jackson, Joao Pedro, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha among others at the striker position.

“We want to build a competitive team” – Newly-appointed Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso outlines plans for debut season in charge

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has outlined his plans for his debut Premier League campaign at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard was sacked by Real Madrid in January after a tumultous seven-month spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. He was appointed as the Blues’ boss in May and officially took over the side in July.

Ahead of the London side’s pre-season tour, Alonso revealed his goals and detailed his thoughts on the squad. Speaking at a press conference, the 44-year-old tactician said (via chelseafc.com):

“We want to build a competitive team and we are in that process. We have great quality, great talent, and we need to know what it takes to compete in the Premier League. We want to have a good season and we want to deserve to finish as high as possible.”

“For that, we need to work hard to develop the team, with new players, a new coach, and new ideas. Sometimes that takes longer; sometimes it happens spontaneously quicker. But we are ready to try to develop the idea we have, this plan. So far, we have good feelings,” Alonso added.

Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly will be against Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday (July 28).
