Danny Welbeck already thinks Chelsea have two ‘incredible’ players with talks advanced
One impressive element of Chelsea’s transfer window is that news of a signing has come out of the blue. First, Marco Palestra was immediate, and then Morgan Rogers was signed two days after reports.
What looks likely to be Chelsea’s third signing has followed that route. Veteran striker Danny Welbeck looks set to be the Blues’ third addition, with 35-year-old Welbeck expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge.

The England striker scored 13 Premier League goals last season, and Chelsea are now in ‘advanced talks’, according to BBC Sport. It sees the Blues add some much-needed experience to Xabi Alonso’s attack.
Of course, Welbeck would be the latest of many players to swap Brighton for Chelsea, alongside Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro, Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella and plenty of other signings made by the Blues.

Welbeck helped make Pedro the player he is at Brighton. Perhaps that could have played a role in Chelsea choosing to sign Welbeck, who has a year remaining on his contract with Fabian Hurzeler’s side.
Speaking to BBC Sport in November 2024, Welbeck shared his thoughts on Pedro, describing the Brazil striker as one who never stops fighting: “He’s a fighter and a warrior, and he goes right until the end.”
But it’s not just Pedro, his old striker partner, that Welbeck already admires ahead of his potential move to Stamford Bridge. The former Man United ace is also a big admirer of Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.
“I remember Moises came and then he went on loan to Belgium. And when he came back, it was just like everything clicked into place for him, and he is an incredible player,” Welbeck said, just last year in 2025.
Not good news for Liam Delap or Emmanuel Emegha
Welbeck is the perfect back-up striker for Pedro. A veteran player who knows the game and understands that he will not start as many as Pedro, but one who can come on and make a difference as a substitute.

What it does mean, however, is that Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha may be told to search for a new club. Delap and Emegha have scored in behind-closed-doors friendlies against Crawley and Bromley.
But neither are going to accept being a third-choice striker, especially without European football. That lack of opportunity and minutes will surely see Delap and Emegha consider an exit. Chelsea will oblige.
Emegha has only just joined, so a loan feels more likely, while Delap – after a poor first 12 months in West London – could see a sale materialise. A fee of around £40m will be enough for Chelsea to sell Delap.
