Chelsea are in talks to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson as they seek to add experience to their team.
The Blues have officially completed a full 180 in the transfer market. Chelsea have gone from almost exclusively targeting young players to now eyeing up several options who are on the wrong side of 30.
Earlier this summer, new manager Xabi Alonso requested that his former Bayer Leverkusen star Granit Xhaka be signed. However, the deal collapsed because Sunderland did not want to lose their captain.
Earlier on Monday, it emerged that Chelsea had started exploring a transfer for 35-year-old Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, with a move believed to be possible. The former Man Utd and Arsenal forward is said to be very keen to join the Stamford Bridge club.
Now, David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Chelsea are working on another shock deal. The Blues are leading the race to sign former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.
Chelsea eye Henderson
Several Premier League clubs are interested in signing the 36-year-old, but Chelsea are the favourites for his signature at present. Crucially, Henderson is unlikely to command a transfer fee.
Although the midfielder has a year left on his Brentford contract, the Bees are willing to allow him to leave on a free transfer. Henderson joined the club for nothing last year after brief stints at Al-Ettifaq and Ajax.
Henderson, who started 22 games for Brentford last season, is understood to be open to the move. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be fit for the start of the campaign after breaking his left arm following England’s win over Mexico at the World Cup earlier this summer.
In addition to Welbeck and Henderson, Chelsea are also exploring a potential move for former Man City defender John Stones, who is fielding widespread interest from around England and Europe.
Arsenal have also been linked with the 32-year-old, while Juventus and Inter have already held discussions with his entourage. The latter are believed to be set to formally offer him a two-year contract shortly.
