Chelsea interest in John Stones faces serious competition after Inter and Juventus opened talks with the free-agent defender’s representatives.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Stones is open to continuing his career in Italy despite approaches from Chelsea and Arsenal.
Inter have been in direct contact with the England international’s agent for several days. Juventus have also requested information as they consider signing the former Manchester City defender.
Football Italia reports that both Serie A clubs are exploring a free transfer. No agreement has been reached, while Stones retains control over his next destination.
The 32-year-old became a free agent when his City contract expired on 30 June. He spent 10 seasons at the Etihad Stadium and won six Premier League titles and the 2022/23 Champions League.

Chelsea previously added Stones to their centre-back shortlist as Xabi Alonso looked for experience and leadership. ReadChelsea covered how the Blues were considering the former City defender alongside their pursuit of Maxence Lacroix.
Stones can play in central defence, step into midfield and operate on the right of a back three. His quality in possession would suit Alonso, although his injury record and likely salary remain important considerations.
Chelsea have since moved closer to completing the signing of Lacroix from Crystal Palace. That deal could reduce the urgency surrounding another centre-back unless further departures create space.
Trevoh Chalobah remains the subject of interest from Como, while other defenders could leave before the window closes. Stones would offer a different profile to Chelsea’s younger options and bring extensive experience of title races and Champions League football.
However, Chelsea interest in John Stones may now depend on whether the defender prefers remaining in England. Inter and Juventus have made the clearest recent moves, while Romano says the final decision rests with Stones.
