Morgan Rogers’ previous praise for Jordan Henderson demonstrates exactly why Chelsea are keen on signing him. The ex-Liverpool captain emerged as a transfer target for the west Londoners at the start of the week.
It’s an eyebrow raising move which certainly goes against the club’s usual transfer policy of looking for younger talent with re-sale potential. At the age of 36, he would comfortably become Xabi Alonso’s oldest player in the squad.
The new Blues’ manager is looking to bulk up his young team with veterans, having already made the huge £116million transfer of Rogers. Having just arrived from Aston Villa, his comments about Henderson explain why the Blues are so interested in signing him.

During the World Cup, Rogers was asked about Henderson’s influence in the England team. He replied with a glowing rendition of the Brentford midfielder, who has also won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
Rogers said: “The best guy I’ve ever come across in football. If people did a blind ranking of people they want at the camp beforehand, he’d be in everyone’s top five.”
He also described Henderson as “the funniest guy” in the England team before saying: “Whether he is smiling, no matter how he is, he has that persona and that character.”
Henderson would be the second player over the age of 26 to arrive at the club. This rumour proceeded the club’s move for Maxence Lacoix, who is set to arrive from Crystal Palace.
If the £52m deal for the Frenchman is completed, he would become the first player over the age of 26 that Chelsea have paid a transfer fee for since the summer of 2022. Alonso has not commented directly on the links to Henderson, but has repeatedly said he is building a Chelsea team that will be ready to compete for the big honours.
Speaking in Sydney, Australia, Alonso said: “We want to build a competitive team and we are in that process. We have great quality, great talent, and we need to know what it takes to compete in the Premier League.
“We want to have a good season and we want to deserve to finish as high as possible. For that, we need to work hard to develop the team, with new players, a new coach, and new ideas.
“Sometimes that takes longer; sometimes it happens spontaneously quicker. But we are ready to try to develop the idea we have, this plan. So far, we have good feelings.”
Chelsea are also keen on Brighton and Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck, who would bring a similar level of experience to the club. Henderson also knows him well, having played alongside him at the 2014 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
