Napoli prepare £15m for Blues’ star
Chelsea transfer news: Napoli have identified Benoît Badiashile as one of their leading defensive targets after Alessandro Buongiorno’s knee injury left Massimiliano Allegri searching for immediate cover at centre-back. According to Sport Mediaset, with the report relayed by Transfer Feed, the Italian club are preparing an opening offer worth €17.5 million (£15 million) for the Chelsea defender. That figure falls well below Chelsea’s reported valuation of around €30 million, although discussions are expected to continue because Napoli would rather sign the Frenchman on loan with an option to buy than complete a straight permanent transfer.
It’s an interesting situation. Chelsea no longer view Badiashile as part of Xabi Alonso’s first-team plans, which encourages Napoli, yet the Premier League club still believe his value sits comfortably above the proposed bid. Finding a compromise will take some work.
Badiashile, now 25, endured another frustrating campaign in 2025/26. Repeated muscular injuries interrupted his rhythm and restricted him to only 16 appearances across all competitions, with 11 starts. In the Premier League, he featured eight times, making six starts, while he added four UEFA Champions League appearances. By the end of the season he had slipped well down Chelsea’s defensive pecking order, and reports in late July suggested he had been placed in the club’s separate training group as Alonso reshaped his squad.

Chelsea shouldn’t accept £15 million. That fee simply doesn’t reflect the player’s profile, even after such a difficult year.
The London club spent around £32.7 million (€38 million) to sign Badiashile from Monaco in January 2023. Agreeing to a deal worth less than half of that amount would leave Chelsea absorbing a sizeable accounting loss while weakening their position in negotiations for other outgoing players.
There is still value attached to the defender. Left-footed centre-backs remain difficult to find, especially those who are 194cm tall and feel comfortable receiving possession in tight spaces and building attacks from the back. Despite his limited action last season, Badiashile completed around 95% of his passes across all competitions, showing that his technical quality never disappeared even while injuries disrupted his progress.
Napoli know all of this. They aren’t chasing a bargain simply because of potential. They need immediate depth after Buongiorno’s setback, and that urgency gives Chelsea room to negotiate from a stronger position.

Chelsea would make far more sense by pushing for a package between £20 million and £22 million, with realistic performance-related add-ons if Napoli refuse to match the asking price immediately. That approach protects part of the club’s original investment while clearing wages from a squad already carrying several central defenders.
Another route looks equally sensible. Chelsea could agree to a season-long loan containing a mandatory purchase clause triggered by achievable conditions instead of accepting a voluntary option to buy. That structure gives Napoli short-term flexibility while providing Chelsea with certainty over a future sale.
Keeping Badiashile away from the senior group serves little purpose if Alonso has already made his decision. Even so, selling too cheaply creates another problem. Chelsea still hold leverage because Napoli’s defensive shortage leaves them with limited alternatives in the market.

Chelsea should reject the reported £15 million offer, though they shouldn’t dismiss Napoli’s interest. Badiashile’s recent injury record has weakened his market value, yet his age, international experience and technical ability still carry genuine worth. A structured permanent package closer to £20-22 million, or a loan with a mandatory purchase clause, feels like the smarter piece of business. That strikes a fair balance between reducing the squad, recovering a respectable portion of the original transfer fee and avoiding an unnecessary discount.
