Chelsea and England legend announces retirement in emotional open letter

Chelsea and England defender Millie Bright has announced her retirement from football after 12 years with the Blues

Chelsea captain Millie Bright has hung up her boots and called time on her football career. The 32-year-old defender started out as a professional with Doncaster Belles before making the move to Chelsea ahead of the 2015 season.

Over 12 remarkable years with the Blues, Bright racked up 314 appearances and collected 20 trophies, bowing out as the club’s longest-serving player. On confirming her retirement Chelsea announced she would remain at the club as a trustee of their foundation and take on a new position as club ambassador.

In an open letter to Blues fans, Bright said: “I’ve been thinking about my future for a while now. There have been so many factors to consider, but I have decided that I’m ready to say goodbye to playing football.

“I’m hanging up my boots. I always said I would retire at the top, and that I would retire at this club. I’m living up to what I said. I’m not prepared to fight for any other club or pull on any other shirt. It’s time.

“This club means everything to me. In my career and my life, Chelsea has been the reason for getting up every single day and pushing through the hard times to get back to the good times.

“I owe everything to this club. The people that I’ve met, the friends that I’ve made, and of course, the memories.

“I can take those recollections home with me and when I have kids, tell them all about my career, show them the pictures and the trophies. It’s been the biggest gift.”

The retirement announcement follows her decision to step away from international football in October 2025, having earned 88 caps for England. During her time with the Lionesses, she was part of the squad that won the European Championship on home soil before captaining the side to the World Cup final the following year.

Last November, Bright broke Jordan Nobbs’ Women’s Super League appearance record of 210 games after featuring in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

During her time at Stamford Bridge, the defender claimed eight WSL titles, six FA Cups and four League Cups, and played a pivotal role in their treble-winning campaigns in 2021 and 2025. Chelsea have confirmed that a tribute will be made to Bright during their last WSL fixture of the season against Manchester United on May 16 at Stamford Bridge.
