Bernardo Silva has made decision on Chelsea move

Former Chelsea midfielder and club legend Jody Morris has now tempered expectations over a potential summer move for Bernardo Silva, insisting that the Manchester City captain may not be interested in a switch to Stamford Bridge once his contract expires. The fresh remarks come amid mounting speculation about Silva’s future as one of Europe’s most sought-after free agents.

Silva, who has spent nine trophy-laden seasons at Manchester City and serves as club captain, is poised to leave the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer this summer following the expiry of his contract. The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been a central figure in City’s domestic and continental success, winning multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Earlier this month, Morris had appeared to endorse the notion of CHELSEA pursuing Silva, praising the midfielder’s intelligence, leadership and big-game influence. However, in more recent comments attributed by some reporting outlets, he acknowledged that several factors — both personal and sporting — may make a Stamford Bridge move less appealing to Silva than initially assumed.

Morris, speaking to local media platforms with close ties to Chelsea’s fanbase, suggested that despite Silva’s undeniable quality, the Portuguese international may be inclined to seek a “new challenge” beyond England. Those remarks have quickly been interpreted in transfer circles as a hint that Silva’s future may lie elsewhere — with Spain or Italy emerging as more likely destinations.

Speaking to FindSisterSites, he added: ‘But if I was Bernardo Silva, I wouldn’t be looking anywhere near Chelsea though, and that’s coming from a massive Chelsea fan.

‘I think that’s where a problem lies. We aren’t qualifying for the Champions League and if you’re an experienced player, you want to see other experienced players coming through the door.

‘So whether there’s a domino effect, whoever the first person through the door is will have to be a brave person because if you don’t get Champions League football then I’m not sure many will be following.’

Complicating matters for CHELSEA are claims that Silva reportedly has “no plans” to continue his career in the Premier League, with several well-placed transfer insiders saying the midfielder is exploring opportunities in La Liga or Italy once his City contract ends. Clubs such as Barcelona and others in Spain have been linked with interest, though nothing is understood to be final.

Chelsea’s transfer strategy is already under intense scrutiny as the west London club prepares for a summer rebuild amid managerial uncertainty and a search for a long-term head coach.

With interim boss Calum McFarlane overseeing Chelsea’s final fixtures of the season, the club hierarchy faces mounting pressure to secure marquee signings capable of rebuilding a squad currently outside the Premier League’s top four.

Should Silva ultimately decide against a move to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea would likely refocus their recruitment drive on younger midfield talents or alternative experienced stars able to bolster creativity and leadership.

That recalibration would signal a further shift in strategy under the club’s current ownership — one that prioritises long-term planning over headline grabbing acquisitions.
