Chelsea Identify Surprise Replacement For Marc Cucurella Amid Barcelona Speculation
Chelsea are “closely” tracking Union Sante Fe left-back Mateo Del Blanco, according to reports in Spain.
Catalan newspaper Sport claims that the Blues are “seriously” considering making a move for the Argentinian ahead of the summer transfer window.
There has been speculation about Marc Cucurella’s future in recent days. Comments he made during the last international break, where he admitted that he would consider a move back to Barcelona, have fueled transfer rumours.
Sport believe that the interest in Del Blanco could “open the exit door” for Cucurella, who may look to leave the Blues for a team that will have Champions League football next season.
What do Chelsea fans need to know about the player?
Del Blanco came through the youth ranks of Union Sante Fe, and he was handed his senior debut during a league game against Argentinos Juniors in April 2023.
The fullback has subsequently gone on to make over 100 first-team appearances across multiple competitions, including the Copa Sudamericana (South America’s equivalent of the Europa League).
Del Blanco has played in several positions, including left-back, left and right wingback, and central midfield, but he is most comfortable on the left of a back four.
Del Blanco may be a target for Strasbourg
While it is not unheard of for the Blues to sign players directly from Argentina. One notable example was the addition of Aaron Anselmino from Boca Juniors. They usually use sister club Strasbourg to bring in players who they feel need to adapt to European football.
For that reason, there is a good chance that Del Blanco will end up with the Ligue One side, rather than at Stamford Bridge, if Blueco do decide to make a move for the defender over the coming weeks.
