Chelsea open talks to finalise deal with €45m star

Chelsea have reportedly opened talks with Trevoh Chalobah as they look to finalise a contract extension agreement with the England defender.
Chalobah, 26, has two years remaining on his current deal at Stamford Bridge, although the Blues do have the option to extend this by a further 12 months if they wish.
The England star, who has one senior cap for his country and is in contention to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer, has been Chelsea’s most consistent centre-back this season and the club are keen to finalise fresh terms.
That is according to transfer reporter Nicolo Schirawho has revealed that Chelsea have initiated negotiations with Chalobah in a bid to agree a new contract with the defender.
Chalobah has made 44 appearances across all competitions so far this season and he has been a regular at Stamford Bridge since returning from a short loan spell at Crystal Palace last January.
He was initially placed in Chelsea’s ‘Bomb Squad’ upon the appointment of Enzo Maresca in 2024, and after being left out of their pre-season tour of the USA, his career at the club looked to be over. However, he was only able to seal a loan move to Selhurst Park, and he was then recalled after an impressive four-and-a-half-month stint under Oliver Glasner.
Chalobah has been a key player for Chelsea ever since and the club are keen to tie him down to an extended deal.
Under the BlueCo ownership, when a player has two years remaining on their deal, the Chelsea board have either looked to sanction a permanent sale or agree a new contract, and Chalobah appears to fall into the latter category.
However, if an agreement can’t be reached, rumours have suggested that offers will be considered during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Analysis: Chelsea’s centre-back plan for this summer
Although Chelsea are keen to extend Chalobah’s contract, rather than sanction a sale, fellow centre-backs Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi will almost certainly depart Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis this summer.
The former has only made eight Premier League appearances so far this season, while the latter has impressed since joining West Ham United on loan in January and he could return to the club this summer if they avoid relegation down to the Championship.
Tosin Adarabioyo has also been linked with a Chelsea exit and rumours of a departure will intensify if the Blues secure the signing of a new centre-back, amid interest in Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jan Paul van Hecke, Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix and Nottingham Forest’s Murillo.
