Many believed the departure of Rosenior was going to be the turning point for a group of players who had clearly given up on their former manager.

This didn’t occur though, and McFarlane was asked by Sky Sports after the game whether that it was actually the players who are difficult to coach.

He didn’t agree with this though, stating: “I wouldn’t say that. I don’t think we lacked effort and commitment. We got into some good situations in the second half, it wasn’t down to a lack of effort.

“We believe we will (stop the ‘rot’) we see the lads every day and they are doing everything they can. We need to move on quickly and it’s about responding now.”

Champions League football is now out of the question, and qualifying for any form of European competition next season is looking extremely unlikely.

Jesse Derry’s heartbreaking Premier League debut

A lot of the concern after the game from McFarlane and Chelsea fans alike was regarding the condition of Jesse Derry after he was stretchered off on his Premier League debut.

The 18-year-old won a penalty during a clash of heads in the penalty area, although Cole Palmer was unable to convert from 12 yards.

McFarlane has given a positive update on Derry since the game, and admitted he was disappointed after what had been a bright Premier League debut.

Hopefully it will not be too long before we see the teenager in action for the first team again.
