West Ham and bitter rivals Spurs are in a straight shootout for Premier League survival with three games to go.

But it is now Roberto De Zerbi’s side in control after they beat Aston Villa 2-1 following the Hammers’ woeful 3-0 defeat at Brentford.

Meanwhile Forest piled the pressure on West Ham and Tottenham by also making themselves all but officially safe with a stunning 3-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

With everything going against West Ham over the Bank Holiday weekend, many supporters, pundits and journalists believe the east Londoners are now doomed to relegation.

But not Jamie Carragher, who has given West Ham survival hope with a warning to Tottenham.

The Sky Sports pundit believes the Hammers can still stay in the Premier League at Tottenham’s expense – as long as they take it to the final day when Nuno’s side welcome Leeds to the London Stadium.

And Carragher told Monday Night Football that is a possibility because he can see Spurs drawing with Leeds and losing to Chelsea while fancying West Ham to pick up a point against Arsenal.

“Are they (West Ham) going to beat Arsenal? I find that very difficult to believe,” Carragher said.

“So they’ve almost got to hope that Leeds could go there (to Spurs) and get a point.

“Could they (West Ham) get a point at home to Arsenal? Yes.

“If they match Tottenham’s result and then go to here (West Ham playing Newcastle away and Spurs facing Chelsea away), both tough games, I know Chelsea were awful today, but you can imagine the motivation inside that club and their supporters wanting to send Tottenham down. You can imagine that.

“Then you look at those two fixtures and you think, could West Ham get a better result than Spurs in that set-up? Because that would be a tough game away at Chelsea for Tottenham. That’s the only thing I can think in terms of West Ham.

“But this situation here gives Tottenham a great opportunity to sort of almost put it to bed.

“That’s what West Ham have got to hope, that they can get it to the last day.”

Many fans – not just of West Ham – were angry that Aston Villa made so many changes against Tottenham.
