Chelsea issue Jesse Derry update after star taken to hospital with head injury

Chelsea winger Jesse Derry had to be stretchered off and taken to hospital as a result of a nasty clash of heads in Monday’s home game against Nottingham Forest

Chelsea have said that Jesse Derry is “conscious” and “talking” after the teenager was hospitalised following a sickening clash of heads in Monday’s game with Nottingham Forest.

The 18-year-old was making his first ever Premier League in the Blues’ 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. But he suffered a serious looking injury on the stroke of half-time when he collided with Nottingham Forest defender, Zach Abbott.

Derry was taken away on a stretcher after receiving lengthy treatment with Sky Sports later confirming he had been taken to hospital. Chelsea have since issued a further positive update on the youngster.

“Jesse Derry has been taken to hospital as a precaution following his first-half substitution during today’s #PL game against Nottingham Forest,” the club said via their X account.

“Jesse is conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks. We wish him a speedy recovery and thank the medical staff for their swift response.”

With Derry and Abbott both being withdrawn before the break following their clash of heads, two other players were involved in a nasty collision later in the game.

Morgan Gibbs-White was introduced at half-time but was bandaged up before being taken off following a clash with Robert Sanchez, who was replaced himself by Filip Jorgensen. Thankfully, both players were able to walk off the pitch despite being left with cuts to the head.

Nottingham Forest won the match 3-1 to all but clinch Premier League safety despite Vitor Pereira making EIGHT changes to the team that beat Aston Villa in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final in midweek.

Taiwo Awoniyi broke the deadlock in the first two minutes before Igor Thiago doubled Forest’s lead from the penalty spot. Awoniyi grabbed his second and Nottingham Forest’s third goal early in the second half with Joao Pedro bagging a late consolation for Chelsea.
