Guardiola’s Man City Future Takes Fresh Twist As He Makes “Next Season” Claim

Pep Guardiola has heavily hinted that he wants to continue as Man City manager beyond the end of this campaign.

The Catalan has expressed his delight in how his team has performed, but he says there are lessons to be learned which he can take into “next season”:

“This season we won the Carabao Cup, (reached the) FA Cup final again and still fighting against Arsenal, so what can I say? It is really good.”

“I would have loved to go through in the Champions League, but the level is higher, and it will be good learnings for me for the next season.”

Why has there been uncertainty about Guardiola’s future?

Several respected journalists, including David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, have said that Man City are planning for life without the 55-year-old.

Director of Football Hugo Viana is believed to have put together a shortlist of potential replacements, with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca seemingly the favourite.

The Italian had informal talks with the Cityzens on several occasions earlier this season, prompting speculation about Guardiola’s future.

Guardiola may not have decided on his future at Man City

Viana and City’s hierarchy could simply be putting contingency plans in place just in case Guardiola calls it a day. The manager still has another year left on his contract, so it will be up to him whether he continues beyond the summer.

It may be the case that he is completely focused on the Premier League title battle with Arsenal, and he hasn’t told the club about what his plans are yet.

These comments from Guardiola do, though, seem to suggest that he is looking to stay at the Etihad.
