This Chelsea star has now been bad for as long as he was good

Cole Palmer missed a penalty for Chelsea in their defeat yesterday, and he continues to look like a broken player. Mentally and physically he’s so far from where he’s been.

For a while this season everyone blamed it on his injury – but that was to ignore that the decline had continued for a while. Of course he didn’t turn bad overnight – but after an amazing 18 months he had an average 6 months, and the last few weeks have been truly terrible.

Palmer has now been poor for as long as he was good

Palmer’s drop off for Chelsea has been stark – you can almost draw an exact halfway point in his time at Stamford Bridge for where it all went wrong.

As Lloyd Canfield pointed out for the Sun, Palmer had 37 goals and bagged 21 assists in his first 66 games for the Blues, taking him through Mauricio Pochettino’s season and midway into Enzo Maresca’s. That’s an insane 58 G/A in 66 games.

In the 61 games since, he’s got 16 goals and 10 assists. That’s 26 G/A. So he’s less than half as productive as he was.
