Moises Caicedo surely delighted after hearing who Chelsea could sign this summer

Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordóñez is one target on Chelsea’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea are long-term admirers of Ordóñez, with the 22-year-old catching the eye during Brugge’s Champions League campaign.

Standing at 6′ 2″ and capable of carrying the ball out of defence comfortably, the Ecuadorian boasts physical and technical attributes that are tailor-made for the Premier League.

The youngster has already racked up over 150 professional appearances for the Belgian Pro League giants and is arguably ready to step into one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Chelsea have scouted Club Brugge’s Joel Ordóñez

Ordóñez has been on Chelsea’s radar for several years, and according to TEAMtalk, club scouts were in attendance in Brussels to watch him in action.

He featured in the heart of defence as Brugge secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Anderlecht on Sunday to keep them top of the Jupiler League Champions’ play-offs as they push for the title.

The report also suggests that a £40 million asking price has been placed on the defender’s head, with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all closely monitoring his progress.

Ordóñez – who plays alongside Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo for Ecuador – will surely be delighted that his side could land one of their long-term targets this summer.

Caicedo has already admitted that Ordóñez is good enough to play for Chelsea when giving a glowing reference of his international teammate in 2025.

That connection in the Ecuador dressing room could give BlueCo the upper hand in negotiations this summer, especially if he performs brilliantly at the World Cup.

Ordóñez doesn’t fix key Chelsea issue

A centre-back by trade, but also capable of playing at right-back, Ordóñez would offer incredible versatility to Chelsea’s dressing room.

That being said, someone with no experience of playing for a big club like Chelsea can’t be expected to transform a defence that is in dire need of leadership.

The Blues have missed a calming influence in defence since Thiago Silva departed Stamford Bridge in 2024, and neither of their current options has led by example.

Trevoh Chalobah has been arguably Chelsea’s standout defender, but he needs someone with leadership qualities alongside him.

Therefore, while capturing Ordóñez would be a solid long-term solution, he doesn’t fix their biggest issue in the short-term. Hopefully, the Blues can land the Ecuadorian stalwart and another defender who is currently in their prime.
