Chelsea players could lose £2m each after Nottingham Forest defeat as reality hits

Chelsea are poised to hand players a huge pay cut if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, following Monday’s drab 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest

Chelsea’s players are facing a hit of up to £2 million each if they do not secure Champions League qualification.

The Blues’ hopes of sealing a spot in Europe’s elite club competition took yet another huge blow on Monday, as they were beaten 3-1 at home against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest. It was their sixth successive defeat in the Premier League and saw them remain in ninth in the table on 48 points from 35 matches this season.

If Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth, the team that finishes sixth in the top flight will also qualify for the Champions League. Although Chelsea sit just four points behind the current sixth-place side in Bournemouth with three matches to go, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that the Blues will pick up enough points to get in there.

And should Chelsea therefore fail to earn a place on Europe’s top table, their players are facing a huge pay cut, according to The Sun. It’s reported that contractual clauses are understood to reduce wages by between £30,000 and £40,000 in the event of no Champions League football – and they are now likely to be activated.

Chelsea have made around £100m from playing in the Champions League this season, taking into account prize money, extra matchday revenue and bonuses from sponsors. In contrast, the Blues banked around £15m for winning the Conference League in 2025, while Tottenham won £21m for lifting the Europa League.

Each Chelsea player will have different terms inserted into their contract, with club captain Reece James, for example, signing a contract extension in March which dropped his basic £250,000 per-week wage but put him in line with the incentivised wage structure implemented by the BlueCo ownership group.

And with the Chelsea players potentially handing back up between £30,000 to £40,000 per-week – working out to around £2m a year – the club would be saving more than £50m given the size of the current squad.

Chelsea were second-best throughout most of Monday’s loss against Forest, with Joao Pedro scoring their only goal in stoppage-time after Taiwo Awoniyi’s brace and Igor Jesus’ penalty had put the Reds 3-0 up.

Speaking post-match, the club’s interim manager Calum McFarlane was furious at his side’s performance. “The first 15 minutes were unacceptable. The manner of the two goals conceded really set us back and gave us a mountain to climb,” he said. “It’s a ruthless game, it’s a really high level.

“We cannot start games in the Premier League like this. We’re training tomorrow, we’ll review the game and try to find a reason why and try to make sure the performance level is higher against Liverpool in five days’ time.”

Chelsea have three Premier League matches left. They travel to Liverpool before hosting Tottenham and ending the top flight campaign with a trip to Sunderland. Alongside this, the Blues face Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
