Pat Nevin Delivers Scathing Verdict on Chelsea’s Collapse

After another rough weekend at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has harshly criticised his old club, calling them a team without an identity and run by a boardroom that won’t admit its own mistakes. The Blues are in ninth place in the Premier League with 48 points from 35 games. They have lost six league games in a row, which is their worst streak since 1993.

Manchester City beat the Blues 3-0, Brighton beat them 3-0, and most recently, Nottingham Forest beat them 3-1 at home. Calum McFarlane, the interim manager, has been given the job of stopping the rot after Liam Rosenior was fired just four months into a six-year deal. Nevin didn’t hold back when he wrote about the situation at Stamford Bridge in his most recent column:

“Chelsea right now are a ghostly outline of their former selves, and just about as easy to score against and play through as a spectre. It looks like an entire football club that has become dysfunctional.”

The Scotsman went further, expressing serious doubts that those running the club have the appetite to address the rot at its source.

“The painful thing is not that it was easy to see the problems emanating from the upper echelons of the club, it’s the fact that I will be amazed if the correct decisions are made to rectify them, no matter how much of a period of reflection they have.”

These harsh comments put even more pressure on co-owner Behdad Eghbali, who is thought to be the main reason Rosenior was fired just days after publicly supporting him.

At this point in the season, the numbers are very bad for the Blues. Chelsea are 10 points behind Aston Villa in the race for the top five spots in the Premier League. They have only won one of their last five games across all competitions and have conceded 10 goals. European qualification for next season is now in serious danger, with other clubs seriously vying for spots.

McFarlane, who was promoted from his role with Chelsea’s Under-21 team, will have to contend with a tough schedule in the coming weeks. The Blues will play at Anfield on May 9, then in the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 16. After that, they will play Tottenham and Sunderland in league games.
