Brighton Women 1 – 1 Women – Match Report

We came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Wednesday night.

Fuka Tsunoda’s first-half finish had the Seagulls ahead, but Frida Maanum pulled one back with a tidy finish.

FIRST HALF

Brighton had the first sight of goal as Olaug Tvedten’s shot was saved by Daphne van Domselaar and Carla Camacho headed the follow-up onto the roof of the net.

Maanum carried us forward and went for goal from the edge of the area but Chiamaka Nnadozie was equal to it.

Victoria Pelova’s cross was then knocked wide by Lotte Wubben-Moy at the far post.

Foord broke free before smashing the ball over the bar with power, and Pelova’s free-kick was met by Wubben-Moy, but the flag went up for offside.

Beyond the half-hour mark, Alessia Russo tries her luck from distance, her effort flying just over the bar.

A Smilla Holmberg corner ended up at the feet of Taylor Hinds, who fired over from long range with half-time approaching.

On the brink of the break, it was 1-0 to Brighton, as Tvedten’s free-kick came out to Tsunoda, who smashed it into the back of the net.

SECOND HALF

We made one change at half-time with Mariona Caldentey replacing Pelova, and came close to equalising straight away as Holmberg crossed for Russo, who failed to convert, shooting wide of the bottom left.

In the ascendancy, Hinds found Foord, who drifted in from the left and forced a good save from Nnadozie, who tipped it over the bar.

Mariona then saw an opening but shot straight at the Brighton goalkeeper, before Charlize Rule brought down Maanum in the penalty area but nothing was given.

In the 62nd minute, we scored a lovely goal to make it 1-1. Russo played a great ball through to Maanum, who timed her run well, before slotting it into the bottom right.

But Brighton could have responded instantly as Rule setup Bex Rayner, who shot straight at Van Domselaar.

We then made three further changes, with Stina Blackstenius, Katie McCabe and Beth Mead coming on for Maanum, Olivia Smith and Hinds.

Kim Little made a good last-ditch block from to deny Madison Haley as Brighton searched for a late winner, before our next change came in the 83rd minute as Chloe Kelly replaced Foord.

Blackstenius saw a late header saved as we were unable to find the winner that would keep us in the WSL title race.
