Chelsea want their summer signings to have one key quality
Chelsea’s season is turning from bad to worse with each passing matchday. Most recently, the Blues lost 3-1 to Nottingham Forest, which makes it even more difficult for them to qualify for European football next campaign. The Champions League spots are now mathematically out of reach.
As a result, it is high time that BluesCo revisit their overall vision for the club, including their transfer policy. The new owners have relied heavily on recruiting talented youngsters, most of whom have limited experience at the highest level.
That said, it looks like that approach could soon see a change if reports are to be believed. In fact, the Blues board have made it clear what criterion they are looking for in players they want to sign this summer.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea will tweak their strategy and sign more experienced, mature players. The Blues are looking at players who have played in one of the ‘big five’ European leagues and also know what it takes to compete in Europe alongside domestic competitions. Handling the demands and pressure of such a schedule is seen as key.
Chelsea are losing their status as an elite club
Ever since the change in ownership, Chelsea have managed to win just two trophies. Both of them came last season when the club lifted the Conference League and were crowned Club World Cup champions.
Fans had high hopes for the Blues this campaign. But things have gone downhill since then. Chelsea are currently sitting in ninth position, having won none of their last six league matches. Over these last four years, they have gone from being an elite club to a mid-table one. That is the bitter truth.
The club, which was always fighting for multiple pieces of silverware not too long ago, is struggling to even make it to any of the European competitions, let alone the Champions League.
BlueCo will have to find the answers soon
Time is ticking for BlueCo to sort out the multiple issues at the club. The change in transfer policy is obviously a good place to start. However, there are other areas they will need to focus on as well.
Notably, the club have parted ways with two of their managers so far this season. Calum McFarlane is here only as the interim manager, and they are in search of their next permanent head coach. It remains to be seen who they manage to bring.
It is also worth mentioning that some key Chelsea players might leave the club in the summer. The board will have to prepare themselves and start searching for replacements if that happens.
