Newcastle are interested in signing a Chelsea striker this summer, but it is Liam Delap and not Nicolas Jackson as has been widely reported.

The Magpies are gearing up for a huge, potentially transformative summer window. Despite on-pitch success, 2025 proved to be a disastrous year for Newcastle in the transfer market.

They lost their superstar striker Alexander Isak and failed to adequately replace him. Moreover, their posturing during the negotiations – insisting that he wasn’t for sale, only to end up budging – was a major blow to the credibility of their project.

It was proof that Newcastle have yet to reach the same level as the Premier League’s elite, and this point was also hammered home when numerous key targets snubbed them in favour of joining rival clubs.

One of the players who turned down a move to St. James’ Park was Ipswich Town’s up-and-coming young striker Liam Delap, who was one of the most in-demand commodities in the Premier League due to a cheap release clause and the Tractor Boys’ relegation.

Delap could join Newcastle after all

The 23-year-old opted to join Chelsea instead, but it was a move that has yet to work out. Not even a full year into his stint at Stamford Bridge, Delap is already under intense scrutiny and the subject of persistent speculation.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Delap could indeed leave Chelsea after just one season, and his destination could be Newcastle after all. “There will be outgoings and one could be Liam Delap,” Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT.

“My information is that the player would like to stay and fight for his place, and if you’re Liam Delap, even with Joao Pedro locking down that lead number 9 role, you’re maybe waiting to see who the new manager is, but there is interest in Liam Delap, particularly, I’m told, from Newcastle United, who will add another striker this summer.

“Nicolas Jackson is going to return, the obligation to buy was always near impossible (for Bayern Munich), but links with Newcastle or new ones at this stage are wide of the mark. If Newcastle are going to raid Chelsea for a striker, it would more likely be Delap than Nico Jackson as of now.”

Jacobs believes that Newcastle are “going to be really busy” this summer in order to rectify the mistakes of last year. However, that does not mean that they will look to cash in on Nick Woltemade to make way for a new signing like Delap, as has been suggested by some reports.

“It is possible that we see a striker exiting St James’s Park as well, but I don’t think we can say Woltemade needs to leave for Newcastle to sign another striker,” Jacobs explained.

“It’s more two big stars could depart, and they may not be in the No.9 position, and that will provide the funding for Newcastle to do a significant squad revamp, of which finding another goalscorer is one of their biggest priorities.”
