Cole Palmer transfer update as Manchester United reach agreement on Chelsea star

Cole Palmer has had a disappointing season by his own high standards and speculation continues to link the Chelsea star with a move back to Manchester and the club he supported as a boy, United

Manchester United have ruled out making a summer move for Cole Palmer.

It’s understood that United chiefs, despite admiration for the Chelsea and England star, have decided that making a move this summer is not one of their priorities.

There have been claims that Palmer has become unsettled at Stamford Bridge during a difficult campaign, where despite reaching an FA Cup Final, Chelsea have burned through two managers and are on a six-game losing streak. That has put their Champions League hopes up in smoke – while United have flourished since ditching Ruben Amorim.

Palmer himself has suffered a dramatic loss of form, which has left is inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in serious doubt.

It’s been claimed in some quarters that Palmer wants to be playing Champions League football next season and would be open to a return to the club he grew up supporting. It’s believed Manchester-born Palmer has been impressed with their recent renaissance under interim boss Michael Carrick, who is now in pole position to be made the club’s permanent manager this summer.

However, United have other priorities they hope to strengthen this summer and with Bruno Fernandes in the form of his life, they believe it is difficult to justify the financial outlay that would be required to take Palmer to Old Trafford.

Palmer, who turned 24 earlier this week, has a deal at Chelsea until 2033 worth £150k-a-week and United know it would cost them at least £90m to persuade Chelsea bosses to cash in.

United spent almost £210m last summer rebuilding their attacking options, with the signings of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Kobbie Mainoo has been handed a new deal and Fernandes may well be next in line – despite the Red Devils’ top brass having been willing to cash in on him last summer, only for Amorim to put his foot down and persuade the Portugal international to stay put.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to sign two central midfielders and two defenders this summer and has held talks with Carrick over what’s required. Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte will leave United, while crocked centre back Matthijs de Ligt is also expected to depart.

And United have admitted privately that Palmer would be an expensive luxury the club doesn’t need and cannot afford.
