Agents of Chelsea defender begins talks with Barcelona but there’s one big problem

Chelsea’s summer transfer business looks to have started early. The Blues are preparing for multiple changes ahead of next season.

The club is set to undergo a period of transition with several first team players expected to depart. There is uncertainty surrounding multiple players, including Liam Delap and Enzo Fernandez.

Wesley Fofana is another who could move on. The French defender has been at Stamford Bridge since his move from Leicester City in 2022.

He has never really kicked on and is far from one of the first names on the team sheet. As a result, Chelsea appear willing to move him on before his contract expires in 2029.

Barcelona begin talks to sign Wesley Fofana

Journalist Matt Law, who spoke on the London Is Blue podcast, recently confirmed Chelsea’s directors are ‘very happy’ to let the former Saint Etienne centre-back leave.

Due to Chelsea’s openness to negotiate, according to Sky Switzerland, Barcelona have begun talks with Fofana’s agents.

The 25-year-old is approaching his prime and has an abundance of experience, both domestically and internationally. He is an attractive option and one which could be attainable.

Playing in La Liga — not as physically demanding as the Premier League — might suit Fofana better too.

The Frenchman has struggled with multiple injuries during his four years in West London, most notably a cruciate ligament tear in 2023 which kept him out for a full calendar year.

A deal to bring Fofana to the Nou Camp isn’t as straightforward as it may seem at this stage, though.

Barcelona and Chelsea disagree over structure of Fofana deal

The Blues value Fofana at £30 million and would prefer a permanent transfer. Barcelona have different ideas, though.

The Catalan giants, still experiencing financial difficulties, hope to sign Fofana on loan with an option to buy. This type of deal would only benefit the buying club and the player — not Chelsea.

Of course, it all depends on just how desperate the Blues are to cash in on their number 29. This early impasse will reveal the club’s true intentions, but there is a risk attached.

Failure to find a compromise could also cause talks to stall and see Barcelona look at other defensive targets.

During his time with Chelsea, Fofana, who is among Chelsea’s highest earners on £200,000-per week, has directly contributed to four goals in 68 games in all competitions.
