Xabi Alonso is now joint favourite to be named Chelsea manager for next season.
The odds on the Spaniard have got shorter, while Andoni Iraola’s have lengthened a touch after his links to Crystal Palace. That puts them neck and neck at around 2/1.
Marco Silva, Frank Lampard and other runners are significantly further back. It really feels like the Blues are going to do all they can to persuade Alonso, then fall back on Iraola if they can’t convince the former Real Madrid coach.

A piece for the Athletic by Graham Ruthven takes a look at Alonso and why Chelsea want him. It’s pointed out that his brief spell in Madrid failed in part because the squad there weren’t suited to his style of football. There are questions whether Chelsea will be any better set up.
The egos in our dressing room should be a little smaller, considering the players are young and have largely won nothing. But they’ve already shown they can see off managers in short order.
