Chelsea need €50m minimum for star left-back- Cucurella talks influencing chase
Chelsea’s growing interest in Maxi Araújo is now colliding with Sporting CP’s transfer strategy, as the Portuguese club begin shaping both their asking price and their succession plan.
The Uruguay international has been one of Sporting’s breakout names this season. His Champions League performances pushed him further into the spotlight and attracted attention from across Europe.
As we’ve reported throughout this saga, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur were among the first Premier League clubs to make contact regarding the 26-year-old.
More recently, we reported with exclusivity that Newcastle and Aston Villa were interested as well. Manchester United and Manchester City also entered the picture last month.
Now, the Lisbon side’s position is becoming clearer. As the Portuguese press put it, all suitors ‘already know Sporting’s demands’.
Sporting set new benchmark for talks
Maxi Araújo is protected by an €80m (£69m) release clause, but Sporting already appear to have established a more realistic starting point internally.
According to Portuguese newspaper To Ballthe Lisbon side will only seriously consider proposals from around €50m (£43m) upwards.
That represents another step up from the earlier €40m-€45m figures circulating around the market.
The club’s stance reflects both the player’s season and the expectation that his value could still rise further.
Araújo has now played 44 matches this season, scoring seven goals and adding four assists. In the Champions League, he stood out both defensively and physically, something that particularly caught attention in England and Spain.
Chelsea connection creates interesting angle
Maxi Araújo’s situation is also becoming indirectly linked to Chelsea. This latest report explain that Atlético Madrid accelerated their interest in the Sporting player because negotiations for Marc Cucurella are proving difficult.
Diego Simeone’s side had viewed the Chelsea defender as their priority option for the left side. However, with that move looking increasingly complicated, Araújo has quickly risen from alternative target to a much more serious possibility.
That creates an interesting dynamic around Chelsea.
On one side, the Blues themselves have already shown interest in Araújo. On the other, their reluctance to facilitate a Cucurella exit may now help push Atlético further towards the Sporting player.
Tottenham and Manchester United remain in the wider group of clubs monitoring developments closely.
Sporting already preparing for possibility of exit
Despite publicly wanting to keep him, Sporting are also acting pragmatically behind the scenes.
The report says the club are already scanning the market for left-sided replacements. That planning becomes even more relevant if both Araújo and his substitute Ricardo Mangas leave this summer.
Internally, there is even discussion about potentially signing two players for the position if departures materialise.
That does not necessarily mean Sporting expect a sale imminently. However, it does show they are preparing for the possibility.
World Cup strategy could delay everything
While all points to imminent movement, Maxi Araújo’s future may not change so quickly.
Sporting’s idea is to wait until after the World Cup before entertaining concrete negotiations. The belief inside the club is that a strong tournament with Uruguay could drive his valuation even higher.
For interested clubs, including Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United, the challenge may now become timing as much as money.
The market is clearly building around Araújo. Sporting simply believe it can become even bigger in a few months’ time.
