At the turn of the year relegation seemed a certainty for the Hammers.

But after a terrible first few months in charge, Nuno Espirito Santo finally started to get a tune out of his squad, closing a 13-point gap on Spurs to climb out of the drop zone and above their bitter rivals with five games to go.

The script well and truly flipped last weekend, though, with West Ham’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford seeing them drop back into the bottom three after Spurs beat Aston Villa.

The Hammers now look the favourites to drop with Tottenham playing Leeds, a discombobulated Chelsea and then Everton.

Some fans want Nuno to stay regardless of whether the club are relegated.

Hammers News revealed Nuno will leave West Ham one way or another if they drop with three-time Hammer of the Year Scott Parker among the possible candidates to replace him.

There have been claims Nuno could stay even if the Irons are demoted to the Championship, with West Ham simply unable to afford to pay off yet another manager.

But now Nuno and West Ham appear to have made his future perfectly clear if Hammers drop.

And that appears to be the case with Nuno and the Hammers board.

Hammers News put it to the most senior spokesman for West Ham’s joint chairmen whether Nuno would be staying if the club drops.

The spokesman for the board had been talkative about a number of things this week, not least warning Spurs that West Ham are not down and out yet.

But when asked about Nuno, the response was radio silence.

Then came word from the man himself.

And again sometimes what people don’t say reveals more than what they do.

Nuno was asked directly whether he intends to stay at West Ham beyond the end of the season.

His refusal to answer the question directly spoke volumes.

“I don’t have one second to think about next season,” Nuno told the press.

“It’s so demanding what we have, the challenge, that’s what we have to focus on.

“I don’t have enough energy to think about what’s ahead. It’s tomorrow, then tomorrow, day-by-day.”

If Nuno, who signed a three-year deal when he arrived in September, was committed to staying at the club beyond this season regardless of what division they are in, he would have just come out and said so.

But he didn’t, instead avoiding the subject altogether.

It doesn’t take much reading between the lines to see, as repeatedly reported by Hammers News, that Nuno will not be West Ham manager next season if the club is in the Championship.
